Boxing has produced some of the world's most exciting and colorful athletes, from Jack Johnson and Jake LaMotta to Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. They're all in this ultimate guide, the most comprehensive single-volume illustrated boxing reference available, now fully revised and updated to include every major world title fight up to March 2013, plus biographies of modern great champions and reports on outstanding recent fights. In fan-delighting detail, it covers all aspects of the sport, from the days of illegal big-money challenge matches to today's multimillion-dollar televised extravaganza; the careers of the greatest boxers and their best fights; the prominent behind-the-scene figures; the administrative bodies, rules, culture, and ambience of the fight game; the tragedies and the scandals. A statistical section lists the facts, figures, and oddities of the sport.

In my opinion, this is an outstanding publication which would still offer something for boxing fans although is probably best suited to rookies, like me! It is well laid out with chapters on history, rules, administration, trainers, managers, a large honours board, well written paragraph portraits of outstanding boxers ( A-Z ) and more in depth accounts of the famous world champions, like Ali, Tyson, Louis etc... Those with greater knowledge of the sport might be a little frustrated by the editing of the paragraph portraits. For example, under the Max Schmeling entry, no mention was made that he was anti-nazi and that he funded his opponent, Joe Louis when the latter got into debt ( the larger portrait of Louis mentions that President Kennedy wrote off his tax bills ). The paper quality is superb and the selection of photographs is appropriate to the text. Overall, this is a "must have" for anyone with more than a passing interest in the sport of boxing.

The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Boxing Seventh Edition Harry Mullan Bob Mee Matt Bozeat 9781780973975 Books Reviews

Nothing that I didn't know. Poorly researched and not to be used as a reference when better ones are available
records on win loss are not accurate, number of titles won are not accurate either. opinions on some of the fighters are a little biased. but all in all quite entertaining.
There are a lot of good boxing books out thre, and this is another. This does cover more aspects of boxing history, instead of simple, brief bios of famous fighters...if you enjoy boxing.this is a fine addition to anyones' sports library.
I like the first edition the best as the title chronologies per weight class were done in color. The subsequent editions are in bland black and white. Another irritating thing is the British bias. David Haye does not deserve to be on the front cover of a boxing encyclopedia. Then, when you open up the book, you will see two more Brit's on the first two pages (Hatton & Khan.) Each volume is pretty much an extention of the others, but it's an interesting reference to keep handy if you enjoy boxing history.
If you're a boxing fan as I am you'll like this book. Full of great stats and interesting articles. A great "coffee table book".
A great gift for any boxing fan.
This book is not an extensive, in-depth treatise on the history of boxing, but it nevertheless provides a wealth of information for casual boxing enthusiasts such as myself. The book opens with a brief overview of the origins and development of the sport, and then provides biographical information of great fighters from past and present in all weight classes, as well as trainers and promoters. A comprehensive list of champions in all weight classes from the establishment of professional boxing to the date of publication is also provided.
The only group of people more contentious than science fiction fans are boxing fans. We're quick to wrath and quick to argument. Thus, any book that makes a claim to being an "ultimate encyclopedia" either needs to come correct and really amass a phone book's worth of information, or lose a point or two.

This book provides a pretty good overview of both the contemporary boxing scene, and of boxing's storied history. There are also some good anecdotes and resources for references on various historic "firsts." That said, this book is nowhere near exhaustive, and those who buy this book thinking it is some sort of master reference tome are in for a surprise.

That being said, taken in the correct spirit, there's a lot to commend this book, from the lush accompaniment of photographs to the humorous or fascinating asides about the sport's byways and history.

I think a new edition is forthcoming, so if I were debating whether or not to buy this (the 7th edition), I would hold off temporarily. This book was written and published before the rise of the Eastern European resurgence, and the resurrection of the English boxing scene (I think the UK has something like thirteen world titlists currently). Of course, the authors of this book can't be faulted for not predicting the rise of Golovkin, Kovalev, Joshua, etc. so it doesn't lose any points for that. Recommended.
